Hypersensitivity pneumonitis happens when you breathe in specific substances (allergens) that cause your body to have an allergic reaction. This is commonly an occupational disease that can be treated by avoiding exposure to the allergen. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) or extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA) is a rare immune system disorder that affects the lungs. It is an inflammation of the airspaces (alveoli) and small airways (bronchioles) within the lung, caused by hypersensitivity to inhaled organic dusts and molds. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an allergic reaction that causes inflammation (swelling and tenderness) in and around the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs and the smallest airways (bronchioles).

Acute hypersensitivity pneumonitis, also known as acute extrinsic allergic alveolitis, refers to the episodic form of this condition usually happening in just a few hours after the antigen exposure and often recurring with the re-exposure.

Not everyone exposed to these materials develops an allergic reaction. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is a type IV hypersensitivity reaction that can be triggered with a wide variety of allergens.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a lung disease causing inflammation (swelling and sensitivity) of the lung tissue. This inflammation makes breathing difficult. It can lead to irreversible lung scarring over time.
